How Earthquakes Happen

Earthquakes are caused by the sudden release of energy in the Earth’s crust, which creates seismic waves.

Most earthquakes happen because sections of rock along faults are constantly pushed by moving tectonic plates. When the stress becomes greater than the rocks can handle, they slip.
